Eligibility criteria for  Dentistry:

Candidates must have passed 10+2 level exam with physics, chemistry & biology with minimum 50% marks in order to apply for the competitive exam. The All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental exam is common for MBBS & BDS. The fact that colleges conduct an entrance exam for the purpose of admission is a different thing. Government colleges are considered as desired destination by the students/candidates even though the number of seats available are less in number.As far as the private colleges are concerned, the ones approved by the Dental Council of India should be considered.

The degree in dentistry is known as Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS). It is a five year course including internship of one year. Practitioners who have now completed their BDS are then registered by the Dental Council of India to practice industry.

In order to acquire primary experience in dentistry, government hospitals get the first preference. For further grip over the profession, many dentists go for a Master’s Degree i.e. Master of Dental Science (MDS).

A person engaging in this profession, needs to upgrade his/her knowledge on day to day basis. One should be aware regarding the medical improvements, developments in pharmaceuticals & other advanced treatments.

Fees for Dentistry:

The course fees for a MDS degree ranges from Rs.1 lakhs- 3 lakhs & regarding private institution involving Rs. 5 lakhs- 10 lakhs. To acquire scholarship,  candidates can apply for Shri Brihad Bhartiya scholarship. Scholarships are given to 200 students.

Job opportunities for a Dentist:

Doors of hospitals, health departments & dental clinics prove as a great opportunity for dentists to display their skill & talent. Dentists can work in research & advisory department of pharmaceutical. Individual clinic can be set up with the help of hands-on experience.

Pay scale of a Dentist:

A recently trained dentist can expect Rs.6000/- per month in government hospital but in private clinics it is comparatively less. MDS can earn up to Rs.7000/- & more. Practitioners can earn up to Rs.250/- as consultation charges. Further they can earn Rs. 40000/- to 50,000/- per month  depending on the nature of dental problem.
